CEPO calls on IGAD to resolve ministerial dispute between parties

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has been urged to intervene to resolve the wrangle involving the parties over the ministry of defense and veterans affairs.

“I am urging the region, IGAD, AU and also UN to increase their efforts in working together with the principals, the president and First Vice President to ensure that this particular stalemate is sorted out within a short period of time,” Edmund Yakani, the executive director for CEPO told journalists in Juba on Sunday.

He said the political stalemate is a threat to the revitalized peace agreement and especially the extended roadmap which expires with in less than 24 months from now.

Yakani called for pushing the parties to create conducive environment for conducting elections in December 2024.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on March 3, 2023 in a presidential decree sacked Angelina Teny, the minister of defense and veterans affairs and the interior minister, Mahmoud Solomon Agok.

President Kiir also issued another decree that swapped the two ministries, saying the ministry of defense will be controlled by the ruling SPLM-in Government whereas the ministry of interior will be in the hands of the opposition SPLM-IO led by First Vice President Riek Machar.

On March 10, President Kiir held discussion with Machar but the meeting ended in a stalemate.
