Camp Residents In Fear As Flood Threatens To Find Way In To Their shelters
Bentiu IDPs camp leader has told Juba Echo in an exclusive interview that heavy floods broke the berm and overran the main road connecting Bentiu Internally displaced persons camp to Rubkona airstrip and Rubkona town.
Mr. James Gatluak Luony during a weekend conversation with the media revealed that the devastating flood emerged after a very heavy rain that lasted for about two consecutive hours in this part of Unity State.
“As you have seen this is how floods submerged the berm and controlled all main roads to Rubkona, we are now in an alert situation as the internal berm is cracked and when this internal berm breaks, the floods water can flow very fast into Bentiu IDPs camp,” Mr. James Gatluak said.
Mr. Chairman revealed that the loose and weak berm is sending a reasonable amount of fear among the camp residents who are now overwhelmed with thoughts of where next they can go in case of the flood storm them into the camp.
“I call upon all community leaders to come up in large numbers with cultivation tools and join the UNMISS Peacekeepers in controlling the floods from penetrating inside the IDPs camp,” Gatluak begged.
The Sunday floods immersed over 300 business shops, waterlogged five minibusses and washed away four motorcycles in sector one main road to Rubkona airstrip.
“Yes, we are in communication with UNMISS head of field office only that the floods happened at night hours, the UNMISS peacekeepers are trying to support the internal berm so that water cannot penetrate in to the IDPs camp” said Mr. Gatluak the Bentiu IDPs camp high committee chairman.
In June this year, UNMISS head of Field office in Unity state Hiroko Hirahara promised to control IDPs camps from floods destruction.
