The Government of South Sudan has condemned an aerial attack on Amiet Market in the disputed Abyei area that killed and injured civilians and destroyed property on October 19.In a statement issued by the Office of the President on Tuesday, the government described the attack as unacceptable and called for an immediate end to assaults targeting civilians. The government extended condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with the people of Abyei, wishing those injured a speedy recovery.“Civilian lives must be protected, and Abyei must not become a theatre for the conflict in Sudan,” the statement said. The government called for a thorough investigation into the attack and urged that those responsible be held accountable. It also appealed to all parties concerned to ensure safe access for medical personnel and humanitarian assistance to reach affected communities.South Sudan further urged residents to remain calm, maintain peaceful coexistence and reject retaliatory violence. The statement said the government had directed relevant institutions to conduct a coordinated investigation, identify those responsible and take appropriate measures to ensure accountability and prevent further attacks. The condemnation comes amid concerns over the spillover of Sudan’s conflict into neighbouring areas, with South Sudan urging the protection of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those affected.
