Aweil Municipal Council and the local Police have reached an agreement with traders to release cartons of the potent spirit Star Gin.
The cartons of the banned Star Gin were confiscated earlier this year, in a crackdown to rid the deadly alcoholic drink from shops.
Captain Guot Guot Akol, Aweil police spokesperson, said the municipal officials ordered them to handover the confiscated cartons of Star Gin, Boss Gin, Zebra Gin and any other spirits to the traders.
“We have over three thousand cartons in the stores. As police we just implement the rule of law. So the municipal authorities told us to give back to the owners but they will be escorted out of the state to the borders of their choice that they want to go and sell them,” Guot told Juba Echo on Wednesday.
Guot said that the ban on the local spirits was meant to minimize crimes committed by some youth.
He added that the organized forces composed of security, police criminal investigation department have been set up to facilitate the handover of the spirits.
Dut Amuk Lual, a resident of Aweil town said he is delighted by the government’s move, but wondered why in the first place they allow other banned substances like shisha to be sold in the State.
“Even Shisha or hookah was banned but now people are still using them. The government has to stay vigilant on the laws it fixes. Never fix laws and revert back,” Lual said.
