Dialogue is essential to normalize the situation, which currently poses a risk of escalating into a full-blown conflict – AUC Chairperson.

The African Union’s Panel of the Wise is currently in Juba, South Sudan, to engage with key political leaders in an effort to de-escalate ongoing tensions in the country.

Led by former Kenyan Judge Effie Owuor and former Burundian President Domitien Ndayizeye, both recognized for their contributions to peacebuilding in Africa, the high-level delegation is expected to engage with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar during their four-day working visit to help address the political tensions that have escalated, particularly following Riek Machar’s house arrest.

The team also aims to support peace initiatives and reinforce the implementation of the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

The African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, voiced significant concerns on Monday regarding the political crisis in South Sudan. Ali emphasized that dialogue is essential to normalizing the situation, which currently risks escalating into a full-blown conflict.
