Angry man opens fire on in law over dowry in Bor market
Police in Jonglei state has confirmed detaining a suspect who on Thursday evening opened fire on a group of people in Bor market in Jonglei State.
The suspect Chol Mabior specifically aimed at his in law whom he accuses of failing to pay the dowry for his daughter.
“He (Mabior) found him siting with his friends and started shooting them all,” Maj.Gen Elia Costa, the police commissioner for Jonglei state said in an interview by phone on Friday.
Seven people sustained gunshot wounds of which 5 of them were transported to Juba for operation.
“We arrested him and the motive behind the shooting is the issue of marriage,” Costa said.
Costa advised the general public to resolve marriage disputes in a peaceful manner, adding that marriage is a relationship between two parties that does not require violent approach to resolve.
“We have forces in the market but the issue of guns in the hands of civilians is a big problem for us, we have our forces moving around in the market and along the road patrolling,” he said.
