African development bank to provide finances for climate mitigation

The African Development Bank (AFDB) promised on Thursday to avail finance under the “Africa Climate Change Window” to support climate sensitive projects in the country.

Flavio Soares da Gama, the Principal Country Economist for Africa Development Bank, said during the launch of “the country focus report on mobilizing private sector climate and clean growth” that they will be providing funds to support projects that are vulnerable to climate change.

 “We have Action Plan for 2020-2025, the African Development Bank is committed to mobilize financial support to member countries for the pressing need to address issues of climate change across several sectors,” he said during the launch at University of Juba in the capital.

John Akech, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba, said they have over the last two years launched programs in the School of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies, to train individuals from both private and public sector on disaster risk management.

“We build capacity by launching programs in relevant areas, we have over the last two years trained masters students of disaster risk management that train individuals from both the private and public sector, we are also running masters of environmental management in the school of natural resources,” Akech said.

Benjamin Ayali Koyongwa, the Undersecretary of Planning at the National Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning said they are willing to provide necessary support in form of finances to establish enabling environment for investment in all sectors of the economy.
