Activist urges President Kiir to end communal violence in Bahr el Ghazel region
President Salva Kiir Mayardit has been urged to end episodes of inter-communal clashes during his ongoing tour of Bahr el Ghazel region which has been the epicenter of deadly communal clashes.
Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) said the President’s visit to the region should translate into peace dividends for communities in Tonj, Twic and Abyei Administrative Area.
“Our expectation is that the President takes responsibility to ensure the deadly communal violence is mitigated in Bahr El Ghazel region, we have seen in the past the President constitute a committee under Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, the Vice President for Service Cluster but the committee has not produced any tangible results,” Yakani said in an interview in Juba on Tuesday .
Yakani said the President should task Manhiem Bol Malek, the Governor of Warrap State and Chol Deng Alak, the chief administrator of Abyei Administrative Area to end the violence between communities of Twic County and Abyei.
“We have seen deadly violence in Tonj, we want the President to talk to the leaders there to adhere to peaceful coexistence, there will be no peace until we prevent deadly communal violence in Baher El Ghazel,” he said.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit travelled to Wau town of Western Bahr El Ghazal State on Saturday, and later on to Warrap State where he joined Christians to celebration the 100th centenary of Kuajok Catholic Church.
On Tuesday, Kiir arrived in Northern Bahr El Ghazel State where he addressed public rallies like in the previous states he visited.
