Acting mayor summoned by Juba city Legislative council

The Juba City Legislative Council has summoned the Acting mayor Emmanuel Richard Khamis to appear before the legislative Wednesday.

Khamis was summoned under the provision of the local government act 2009, section 37 (subsection 3) to appear in the August.

Then acting mayor had appeared in a video that circulated on social media harassing vendors while holding a pistol in his hand on Sunday during an operation.

He is expected to appear before the August house of the Monday, 18th September 2023.

The National Parliament had on Wednesday recommended the relief of the acting mayor by the governor of Central Equatoria state Emmanuel Adil Anthony.

The SPLM-IO chief whip Faruq Gatkuoth said the acting mayor has to be relieved as his action has gone beyond his mandate.

“This man has come, must pack and go. We ask the governor to relieve him,” he said.

He further added that the government has procedures to follow-up with issues rather than acting in such a manner that the acting mayor did while holding a pistol.

“There is no point of apology here, what will apology do, let him pack and go,” he added.
