Juba Echo is an independent news website founded in 2015.

It’s co-owned by Oyet Patrick Charles and Jackline Kide Daru, all members of the private sector.
Juba Echo is not affiliated with any political, religious, ethnic, community or other groups. It works to bring to the public independent, accurate, fair, and balanced news.

Juba Echo, just like all other media follows trends of information in South Sudan especially but stretches to the region and globally with a focus on analysis, features and commentaries, digging deeper to provide in-depth information to our readers.

Juba Echo gives considerable attention to stories on the environment, gender and South Sudan’s democratic development that includes activities such as the constitution-making process and elections.

We endeavour to tell South Sudan’s stories from every angle to provide our audience with information that they can use to make decisions for their lives, community and government.

Juba Echo’s Editorial Policy

Juba Echo is an indigenous online news outlet in South Sudan that offers an original take on the latest information; politics, business, youth, women, arts and entertainment across the country, as well as providing updates from the East African Region.

Our mission is to generate views, opinions and developments that shape public conversation with the purpose of advancing good governance, democracy and economic development in South Sudan.

We endeavor to pursue the truth in a fair, accurate and balanced way to educate our readers.

Purpose

Juba Echo is dedicated to truth, fairness and transparency. We are impartial and aim to present readers with absolute truth. We hold all staff writers, editors and interns as well as other outside contributors who work with us to the standards outlined below.  

These standards apply to all of our content, wherever and however it may appear. The purpose of this is to make our policies and standards known to both employees and readers. 

We uphold our editorial integrity by avoiding or disclosing any potential conflicts of interest and ensuring that all sponsored stories, reviews and opinion pieces are clearly marked as such. Any known errors are amended and marked with a correction. 

Journalistic Ethics 

The editorial integrity of Juba Echo is “journalism should never be in question for our readers.” Our stories are expected to adhere to a standard of honesty defined by but not limited to the following expectations: 

  • Reliance on verifiable facts, inclusion of original reporting, analysis and good-faith baseline of fairness to parties quoted or cited. 
  • Writers and editors should avoid actual or perceived conflicts of interest but disclose those conflicts of interest wherever applicable.
  • Conflict sensitive reporting should be prioritized 
  • Juba Echo does not entertain or publish biased opinions but stories based on facts or impact based articles

Standards for reporters

  • Plagiarism is prohibited. This has consequences for any reporter working for Juba Echo.
  • Reporters should provide stories that bear accurate information  
  • Reporters and editors must liaise to finalize stories by deadline 
  • No one sided story shall be published 
  • Reporters should send in early stories by 2:45 pm, and late stories by 4:45 pm prompt except for late assignments. 
  • Reporters should send stories by email while copying all the editors 
  • All reporters and editors should cooperate on tasks execution 
  • In case of any breaking news, a reporter is required to send the report in time 
  • The reporters should send stories with pictures 
  • Reporters can be assigned for stories when necessary 
  • Juba Echo may not publish any content which has been published by other agencies
  • There should be gender consideration especially in feature reports 
  • Feature articles should be detailed 
  • Reporters should pitch stories to avoid collision or overlap 
  • Normal stories should bear 300 to 500 words or less when it is containing 5Ws and H
  • Feature reports should be between 500 to 1,000 words 
  • All (reporters and editors) are allowed to positively criticize articles (professionally)
  • Don’t write any story from social media without verifying from original sources 
  • Record interviews and keep audios for future reference 
  • Stories should be balanced
  • Stories with errors may not be published   
  • Reporters should analyze worthy news content 

Note:

We encourage writers to follow the guide when reporting. Juba Echo journalists must submit properly written stories on time putting into considerations facts, fairness and balance of a story and that a story is in the public interest to avoid contradictions or partiality. 

Editors will endeavor to research the background of stories pitched or forwarded for publishing, including any possible ties to the subjects they have proposed writing about.
