South Sudan national security has arrested a group of suspected robbers, notorious for snatching people’s properties in the capital Juba.
Those arrested are suspected to be part of a group, nicknamed “Toronto” who ride motorcycles at high speed while preying on road users for their properties.
They snatch off valuables such as phones, women’s handbags and wigs before flying away on their bikes.
Those picked in Juba are over ten.
“The internal security bureau has the pleasure to announce to the public that NSS operation force has cracked down and arrested more than ten suspected criminals accused of frequent road snatching,” the government agency said in a statement issued in Juba.
NSS said the crackdown was trigger by a series of fatal highway and city robberies in the recent weeks leading to lose of lives, properties and injuries from gangs on motorcycles.
“In one of the disheartening and felonious acts, the gangs also known as Toronto snatched a pregnant woman of her belonging while travelling on a boda boda rider, an act that left the victim succumbing to death of her injuries sustained during the robbery,” it said
“The act is a national security threat and thus requires national security concern since it jeopardises the security and peaceful co-existence of common persons in this country.”
The NSS promised to crackdown on more criminals.
“The crackdown and arrest of these Toronto boys sounds an alarm to their partners in crime to steadfastly abandon the act or risk being simultaneously arrested by the law.”
It called on all citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to provide information leading to the revelation of th whereabout of the criminals for a peaceful and secure South Sudan.
