State lawmakers urge swift implementation of peace deal

By Simon Deng

Central Equatoria State Assembly members have called for swift implementation of the peace deal.

They said majority of South Sudanese are suffering as a result of the ongoing conflict.

The MPs noted that land grabbing; insecurity and economic hardship were on the rise across the country.

“We are concerned with the serious impacts of the conflict on women and children including sexual violence. We appeal for speedy swearing in of the legislators to effectively participate in the peace implementation process,” Jacob Aligo, an MP said.

They were speaking during a three-day training of the state legislators organized by the Centre for Inclusive Governance Peace and Justice.

The event, under the theme, “Capacity Strengthening of Central Equatoria State Members of Parliament for Sustainable Peace” was funded by UNMISS and Multi-donor Trust Fund.

“Cognizant of the challenges associated with successful implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, we do hereby call upon the parties to the agreement to speed up the implementation of the agreement to its letter and spirit within the timeframes,” said Aligo.

Jackline Nasiwa, the executive director for Centre for Inclusive Governance Peace and Justice said that South Sudan needs to focus more on development instead of blame games.

“It is time to take collective responsibility of how to put South Sudan back on its original place, the glory of South Sudan from independence is what we are now starting to put in place,” she said.
