Police in South Sudan has warned it will not tolerate a planned protest by a group of South Sudanese, saying the group is illegal and made the request “in a very dangerous manner.”
The People’s Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA) scheduled the protest for Monday the 30th August.
Earlier this month, the coalition of civil society organizations issued a strong statement advocating for regime change, noting that the leaders failed the people and have become dictatorial.
“The request was written in a very dangerous manner,” Police Spokesperson Gen. Daniel Justin Buolo said in a statement today.
“It’s time for us to sit down and straighten things out. You can’t call a demonstration for an undetermined number of people because we need to know the exact number of demonstrators,” he said.
Buolo warned the coalition had not been registered as a legal body and that it would be treated as such.
“The level of risk is really high because they are calling for nationwide demonstrations. We advise them [demonstrators] not to do so,” Buolo said.
“If they want to exercise their right to free expression, they must work with us as organized forces to ensure that their demonstration is safe.”
