AU Election Assessment Mission Holds Consultations With South Sudan Cabinet

Cabinet Affairs Minister Martin Elia Lomoro has chaired a consultative meeting between members of South Sudan’s Cabinet and an African Union pre-election assessment mission ahead of the country’s planned December 2026 general elections.

The meeting on Aug. 24 was attended by Geoffrey Onyeama, former foreign affairs minister of Nigeria and head of the AU mission, and members of his delegation.

Discussions focused on the ongoing political process and the government’s preparations for the elections.

In a joint statement after the meeting, Onyeama said his engagements with government officials had provided positive indications about South Sudan’s level of electoral preparedness.

He welcomed the government’s efforts and expressed confidence in the prospects for free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

Onyeama reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s electoral preparations and said the mission would continue consultations with government institutions and other stakeholders.

The mission is expected to assess the country’s preparedness, identify challenges and determine areas where additional support may be needed.

Lomoro reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding the elections in December 2026 and described the African Union as an important partner in supporting the electoral process.
