South Sudan, UN Discuss Mission Downsizing and Upcoming General Assembly

South Sudan’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister James Pitia Morgan met Tuesday with Kiki Gbeho, the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative and head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, or UNMISS.

Gbeho briefed Morgan on her recent engagement with the U.N. Security Council on the situation in South Sudan.

The two officials discussed several issues requiring further engagement, including preparations for the upcoming U.N. General Assembly and development cooperation.

They also discussed UNMISS contingency measures and the possibility of reversing some aspects of the mission’s ongoing downsizing.

The meeting underscored the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation between the South Sudanese government and the United Nations on matters of mutual interest.
