Addis Ababa Allocates Land for South Sudan Heritage Project
The Addis Ababa City Administration has allocated land to International Liberty University for the establishment of the South Sudan Heritage Project, a cultural initiative aimed at preserving South Sudan’s history and strengthening ties between South Sudan and Ethiopia.
The project forms part of the wider Village of Legacy initiative championed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, which seeks to preserve the country’s historical heritage while promoting national unity, peace and cultural identity.
According to South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the site will feature a library and a tree plantation designed as a living monument to the country’s struggle for independence and the resilience of its diverse communities.
The library is expected to preserve historical records, cultural traditions and educational materials, while the tree plantation will symbolize environmental conservation, renewal and hope for future generations.
Speaking during the launch ceremony, Dr. Ter Majok, representing the Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Ethiopia, described the initiative as a landmark step in safeguarding the country’s history and cultural identity.
He said the heritage site should reflect the traditions and values of all South Sudanese communities and serve as a lasting symbol of national unity and pride.
Dr. Ter also expressed appreciation to Professor Abraham of International Liberty University for his commitment to advancing the project and thanked Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie for allocating the land and supporting initiatives that strengthen cultural cooperation between Ethiopia and South Sudan.
The initiative is expected to enhance people-to-people ties between the two neighboring countries while preserving South Sudan’s cultural heritage for future generations.
