Ulang Commissioner Appeals for Urgent Medical Aid Amid Worsening Health Crisis
Ulang County Commissioner Maj. Gen. Justin Nhial Batoang has appealed for urgent humanitarian assistance to address a worsening health crisis in Ulang County, Upper Nile State, citing severe shortages of essential medicines and rising cases of disease.
Speaking during a meeting with the Upper Nile State Coordinator in Juba on Thursday, the commissioner said health facilities across the county are running out of life-saving medicines as cases of diarrhea, malaria, infectious diseases and injuries continue to increase.
He warned that the situation could escalate into a wider humanitarian emergency if immediate intervention is not provided.
According to the commissioner, health centers in Ulang have nearly exhausted supplies of basic medicines, including antibiotics, malaria treatment drugs, and medication for chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
The shortages have forced many residents to travel long distances to larger towns in search of medical care, while vulnerable families who cannot afford the journey remain without access to treatment.
“The absence of essential medicines is turning treatable illnesses into life-threatening conditions,” the commissioner said, urging humanitarian organizations and health partners to urgently deliver medical supplies to the county.
He also expressed concern over the increasing number of diarrhea and malaria cases, warning that the outbreak could worsen without a rapid response.
Despite the health challenges, the commissioner said security conditions along the Sobat River basin remain generally stable, allowing humanitarian agencies to transport medicines and other relief supplies to affected communities without major security obstacles.
The appeal comes as communities in parts of Upper Nile continue to face significant humanitarian and public health challenges, increasing the need for coordinated emergency support.
