Foreign Minister Returns from Kenya After Talks on Naivasha Dry Port
South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Dr. James Pitia Morgan, has returned to Juba following an official working visit to Kenya, where discussions focused on advancing the establishment of South Sudan’s dry port in Naivasha.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Morgan held talks in Nairobi with Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, as well as other senior Kenyan government officials.
The discussions centered on bilateral cooperation, particularly the operationalization of South Sudan’s planned dry port in Naivasha. The Kenyan government confirmed that the land designated for the facility has been allocated to South Sudan, with the remaining steps involving administrative procedures between Kenya’s National Treasury and the Kenya Revenue Authority, including the issuance of the required waiver.
Once operational, the Naivasha dry port is expected to improve cargo handling for goods destined for South Sudan by reducing congestion and delays at the Port of Mombasa. The facility will enable traders to clear cargo more efficiently before it is transported into South Sudan.
The ministry said the dry port will also help reduce storage costs, minimize the risk of cargo being auctioned due to prolonged clearance delays, and lower the overall cost of doing business. The improvements are expected to enhance the movement of essential goods while benefiting South Sudanese traders and consumers.
Morgan was received on arrival at Juba International Airport by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal, alongside senior ministry officials.
