Nigeria Women’s Coach Urges Calm After Shock Defeat to Malawi

Nigeria Women’s National Team head coach Justin Madugu has appealed for patience from fans following the team’s unexpected defeat to Malawi, insisting the Super Falcons remain capable of bouncing back and progressing in the tournament.
Responding to criticism from supporters, Madugu said fans have every right to express their disappointment but stressed that his responsibility is to remain composed and address the team’s shortcomings.
“Fans can shout as much as they want. My job is to stay calm and fix it. That’s what I’m doing. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions,” he said.
The coach acknowledged the frustration among Nigerians but described some of the reactions as excessive.
“I know a lot of people at home are angry right now. That’s fine. You’re allowed to feel that way. But some of the reactions I’m seeing are exaggerated. We lost one match. It happens. Malawi played above themselves, and we didn’t finish our chances.”
Madugu emphasized that the defeat does not define Nigeria’s campaign, noting that the team still has two group-stage matches to play.
“We still have two games left in the group. If the players react the right way, this result will be forgotten quickly. We’ve noticed some of our errors and will analyze them before our next match against Zambia.”
The coach also reassured supporters that the team has overcome similar setbacks in the past.
“I assure Nigerians that this difficult moment will be overcome. It happened to us before in 2018, and we went on to win the tournament.”
Nigeria will now shift its focus to the crucial clash against Zambia as the Super Falcons seek to revive their campaign.
