Insecurity Insight has announced the suspension of its Protection in Danger project following the loss of funding, bringing an end to its monthly monitoring, data collection and reporting on violence affecting refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other vulnerable populations.

In its May 2026 Protection in Danger Monthly News Brief, the organisation said all related monitoring activities have been discontinued and no further incident data will be collected or published.

The final report documents numerous security and access incidents affecting displaced communities across Asia and the Middle East during May 2026.

In Bangladesh, a 45-year-old man was reportedly killed by armed groups inside Nayapara Refugee Camp in Cox’s Bazar amid rivalry between militant factions.

In Myanmar, military forces reportedly raided Whe Du Ya Refugee Camp in Karenni State, opening fire and burning homes, forcing residents to flee. In a separate incident in Rakhine State, police reportedly raided an IDP camp and arrested a resident without explanation.

In Lebanon, the report recorded several incidents affecting displaced people and Palestinian refugee camps. These included shelling of a building sheltering internally displaced people in Sidon that reportedly killed 13 people, evacuation orders issued to several Palestinian refugee camps near Tyre, and airstrikes that caused additional casualties and displacement.

The report also documented extensive attacks on refugee camps and makeshift shelters across the Gaza Strip, where repeated airstrikes, artillery shelling, drone attacks and gunfire reportedly struck camps including Al-Bureij, Al-Maghazi, Jabalia, Nuseirat and Al-Shati throughout May. The incidents resulted in civilian deaths and injuries, destruction of homes and shelters, and repeated displacement of families.

In the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the report recorded frequent military raids, arrests, roadblocks and clashes in numerous refugee camps, including Aida, Amari, Aqbat Jabr, Arroub, Askar, Balata, Dheisheh, Ein Beit el Ma, Far’a, Fawwar, Jalazone, Jenin and Nur Shams.

According to Insecurity Insight, the project had monitored threats, violence and access restrictions affecting refugees and internally displaced people worldwide. The organisation said the closure of the programme means the Protection in Danger Monthly News Brief will no longer be published unless new funding becomes available.

The organisation thanked contributors, partners and readers for supporting the project, which aimed to improve awareness of protection risks facing displaced populations in humanitarian settings.
