The National Ministry of Culture, Museums and National Heritage has officially announced plans to commemorate South Sudan’s 15th Independence Anniversary, calling on citizens across the country to actively participate in celebrations that honour the nation’s history, unity and cultural identity.
South Sudan gained independence on July 9, 2011, after an overwhelming majority of Southern Sudanese voted for secession in the 2011 self-determination referendum, leading to the establishment of the world’s youngest nation.
Speaking to journalists in Juba on Tuesday, the Minister of Culture, Museums and National Heritage, Sarah Nyanath Elijah, said the government had already declared 2026 as the National Heritage Commemoration Year, a nationwide initiative aimed at preserving the country’s collective memory, honouring its heroes and heroines, and celebrating South Sudan’s diverse cultural heritage.
“The National Heritage Commemoration Year is dedicated to preserving our collective memory, honouring our heroes and heroines, and celebrating our cultural identity,” Minister Nyanath said.
She urged citizens, state governments, local authorities and communities to organise commemorative activities within their respective jurisdictions, stressing that the anniversary should be celebrated nationwide rather than being confined to the capital.
“The people should carry out commemorative activities within their respective jurisdictions and communities. The success of our Independence Anniversary should not be measured by the size of a budget or by activities conducted only in the national capital. Rather, it should be measured by the participation of our people across the entire Republic,” she said.
The minister noted that this year’s anniversary presents an opportunity for South Sudanese to reflect on the country’s journey over the past 15 years, celebrate achievements, remember those who sacrificed for independence and renew their commitment to peace, unity and nation-building.
The Independence Day celebrations are expected to feature cultural performances, exhibitions showcasing South Sudan’s rich traditions, patriotic events and community-led activities across the country’s states and administrative areas. The government has also encouraged institutions, development partners and the private sector to support the commemorations as part of efforts to promote national identity and preserve cultural heritage.
The ministry said the anniversary celebrations form part of a broader national programme to strengthen patriotism, promote cultural diversity and ensure that the legacy of the liberation struggle is passed on to future generations.
