Activist urges government to speed up implementation of pending peace tasks
The Executive Director of Center for Peace and Advocacy Ter Manyang Gatwech has urged the transitional unity government to speed up implementation of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement ahead of the 2024 elections.
“I call upon our leaders to be practically more than talking, we need action and honest implementation of the peace agreement so that people can go for elections,” said Gatwech in a statement issued in Juba on Wednesday.
He said that if the revitalized peace agreement is implemented fully it will transform the economy of the country.
In August 2022, the parties to the 2018 peace agreement agreed on a roadmap extending the transitional period for 24 months, citing failure to complete critical benchmarks including unification of forces and enacting of the permanent constitution.
Gatwech said the parties should put more efforts on the permanent constitutional making process, economic reforms, and security arrangements.
“Without peace it will not be possible to achieve the levels of trust, cooperation and inclusiveness needed for societies to be resilient to shocks, manage disputes and adapt to changes in their environments,” he said.
