South Sudan parties urged to expedite implementation of electoral tasks

The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has called the government of South Sudan to speed up implementation of the pending electoral tasks ahead of the 2024 elections.

Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director for CEPO said on Monday that the President and his five Vice Presidents need to make critical political decisions on the election roadmap before the end of the transitional period.

“Critical political decisions are required to be agreed upon before January 2024, otherwise the political messages of the Presidency around Christmas festival and rolling out of the New Year 2024 will be below expectations before the citizens,” Yakani said in a statement issued in Juba.

Yakani revealed that the Presidency has registered some tangible progress that includes the reconstitution of the National Election Commission, National Constitutional Review Commission and Political Parties Council.

He called on the Presidency to meet in early December 2023 to take concrete political decisions such as creation of conducive environment for election, funding for elections and also address the gaps identified in the National Election Act, 2023 as amended.
