Jub-a based NGO Green Planet South Sudan is supporting women to undertake farming activities such as poultry and growing of fruits to improve their income.
Health and Environment Coordinator at Green Planet South Sudan, Kejo Samuel Yongo said they are training women to not only improve their livelihoods but also to alleviate persistent food insecurity across the country.
“We have witnessed that our country is so vulnerable, we are striving very hard to alleviate food insecurity in the country, we deal with urban farming and we also grow apples, grapes and vegetables,” he told journalists in Juba on Monday.
“We are also fighting to build up capacity of our own citizens to be in position to have basic skills of growing their own food, we want to improve basic techniques of women on making liquid soap detergents, rabbit keeping including handling urban farming using kitchen water,” Yongo said.
He disclosed that they have so far trained 200 poultry farmers.
James Maring Alison, Acting Director for Animal Resources in the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Animal Resources, Fisheries, Tourism and Hotel, said they are working in collaboration with national and international organizations to improve livelihoods of vulnerable women.
“As government, we manage poultry which is a quick impact project, we help women who are vulnerable, those who are feeding on less than one dollar per day and those with disability are included in the program with the aim to improve their livelihoods,” Alison said.
