Abyei residents call for temporary learning spaces to ease congestion

The head of education for Abyei Special Administrative Area, Nyinkuany Aguer has called for establishment of more temporary learning spaces to ease congestion in classrooms,.

“In Abyei, the schools especially secondary are congested, I want to engage and call upon my government, we need to have more classrooms, we want to use temporary learning space to solve problem of congestion,” Aguer said during press conference held at Imperial Royal hotel in Juba over the weekend.

He disclosed one of the affected schools is Mulmul primary school hosting more than 2500 pupils. Aguer added that Abyei Complex secondary school is accommodating over 2700 students from three schools.

Aguer hailed the initiative run by Education Cannot Wait (ECW) for increasing enrollment, adding that communal conflict in surrounding areas and the conflict in Sudan have led to congestion in Abyei town.

“The insecurity due to communal conflict and the conflict in Sudan has affect children, in Abyei, we are receiving returnees and children are enrolling immediately leading to congestion in schools,” he said.

“The issue of qualified teachers is a real problem in secondary and primary, we do not have enough teachers, most of teachers who came from Sudan were trained in Arabic but due to language barrier they are facing problem,” Aguer said.
