State minister hails gender quota representation for women

The Minister of Peace building in Northern Bahrl Ghazal State Abuor Gordon Nhial has hailed the gender quota for women provided for under the 2018 revitalized peace deal for empowering women in politics.

“The implementation of the affirmative action of 35 percent for women under the R-ARCSS has increased mobilization of women to join politics, and this offers great opportunity for building women effective participation in political leadership,” said Nhial on Wednesday.

Nhial was speaking during the closing of two-day peacebuilding training workshop for women and youth in Aweil town.

He said women are now part of the decision-making at the political level of the state, adding that they are pushing for gender sensitive legislation and bringing up voices of the community at the highest levels of government.

Empower Youth Africa (EYA) in partnership with Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) organized the two – day capacity building and peacebuilding training to sensitize women and youth on their rights to engage in peace implementation process in Northern Bahr El Ghazal state.

The event was attended by Bol Akuar, the Minister of Youth and Sports and Dut Majokdit, the Chairperson of Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, among other government dignitaries.

Santino Aliel Achuil, the Field Coordinator for Empower Youth Africa, said over 30 youth and women have been trained on peace building.

“The major aim of the training was to enhance the knowledge and influencing capacities of women and youth to enable them to engage in Advocacy Campaign with different stakeholders for genuine peace implementation processes,” he said.
