The United States Ambassador to South Sudan, Michael J. Adler on Wednesday slammed the recent looting of relief food belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Bor town by armed criminals.
Adler who was speaking at the farewell reception for South Sudanese attending the 2023 Mandela Washington Fellowship, said serious action should be taken by the government to end such deadly attacks on humanitarian organizations in the country.
“Unfortunately, I also want to talk about something else, it is the great concern for me and my government which is the attack last night on the world food program compound in Bor,” Adler said.
He said the Word Food Programme and other humanitarian organizations are working hard to assist about 9.4 million South Sudanese who are desperate need of assistance this year alone.
The Troika countries which include, the United States, Norway and the United Kingdom condemned the Tuesday incident in Bor town.
“We condemn the May 23rd attack by armed individuals at a World Food Programme warehouse in Bor, Jonglei state. We stand with the WFP and all courageous aid workers and organizations who seek to help South Sudanese people in need,” it said in a statement.
The Troika called on the transitional government to establish conducive environment for the safe and effective provision of humanitarian assistance to the vulnerable people across the country.
“We reiterate our calls on the transitional government to establish conditions conducive to the safe and effective provision of humanitarian assistance,” it said.
In February, a World Food Programme aid convoy transporting relief food broke down outside Bor town, the Jonglei state capital and the relief food was looted by unidentified assailants.
