President Salva Kiir Mayardit has been briefed on engagements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank aimed at advancing South Sudan’s economic recovery, strengthening financial stability and attracting investment. The discussions form part of the government’s efforts to deepen cooperation with international financial institutions and pursue economic reforms to address the country’s financial challenges.South Sudan has been seeking international support to strengthen public finances, improve economic management and expand investment beyond its reliance on oil revenues. Previous engagements with the IMF and World Bank have focused on fiscal stability, institutional capacity-building and opportunities for investment in key sectors, including mining. The government has also been pursuing reforms intended to improve transparency, accountability and the effectiveness of public institutions as it works to promote sustainable economic growth.Cooperation with international financial institutions is expected to remain important to South Sudan’s efforts to mobilise financial and technical assistance, strengthen economic resilience and create conditions for private-sector development. However, the impact of these engagements will depend on the implementation of agreed reforms and the government’s ability to translate international cooperation into tangible economic benefits for the population.Photo Credit: Presidential Press Unit
