Over twenty-five journalists from various media houses were trained on HumanRights and Gender Equality reporting ahead of the December 22nd South Sudanelections, under the theme "The Role of Media in Promoting and ProtectingHuman Rights.Mary Ajith Goch, Country Manager for Journalists for Human Rights, said shewould like to officially welcome you to this program and introduce the project weare currently implementing. As many of you know, Journalists for Human Rightsis a leading Canadian media development organisation. We empower journalists toreport on critical issues such as human rights, democratic reform, climate change, and combatting misinformation. Many of you have worked with us previously, putting a spotlight on hidden human rights issues and sparking essential publicconversations.Human rights journalism is closely aligned with investigative reporting, but with aprimary focus on human-interest stories. Rather than simply confrontingauthorities with accusations of financial wrongdoing, human rights journalismhighlights the real-world impact of those actions. For example, if funds allocated for a hospital go missing, the story focuses on thechildren dying of malaria due to a lack of medication. Rather than solelydemanding accountability, we show decision-makers the direct human cost of theiractions on the community. This approach creates meaningful impact and drivespositive change.Currently, Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) is implementing a project titled"Amplifying the Voices of Women and Girls funded by Global Affairs Canada.Although nearly one year of implementation has passed, this remains a four-yearinitiative operating across eleven countries, including South Sudan. The projectaims to strengthen the participation of women and girls in decision-makingprocesses and address gender gaps within targeted communities.Given the upcoming elections, some may wonder why this training focuses broadlyon human rights rather than a single specific topic. We chose this approachbecause human rights form the core foundation of democratic processes, includingelections.
