South Sudan: activist raises red flag over constitution making process

By Ruot George

A civil society activist has called on the Transitional National Legislative Assembly to name the specialized committees before tabling the draft bill on constitutional making process.

Lona Marekaje, expressed concerns on the draft bill, which she said, forms the basis of the permanent constitution making process.

The bill was taken to parliament on Thursday Nov. 25 for deliberation.

“If they have formed a committee, the committees need to settle in their offices before you bring a bill to be discussed”.

Lona says the bill should just be received in the office of the Rt. Hon. Speaker of the assembly for the specialized committee members to take their seats and study the constitutional making bill. She said the bill will be tabled on Monday 29th November.

“That would just be to receive the bill. Time should be given for these parliamentarians to study the bill, generate their thoughts about it for the public to interact with the parliament,” she said.

Lona who is the head of the civil society group, South Sudanese Engagement Monitoring and Observatory Program – SSUDEMOP, added, “This bill as it stands rights now is insufficient. A lot needs to be done”.
