Juba City Council Introduces Nightly Waste Collection, Warns Against Illegal Dumping

Juba City Council has introduced a nightly waste collection program and warned residents, shop owners and other businesses against dumping garbage on roads, in drainage channels or other unauthorized areas.

The council said businesses operating along major roads and in markets must clean their premises, properly package the waste they generate and place it at designated roadside collection points between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. each evening.

Municipal waste collection teams will begin collecting the waste from 9 p.m., according to a public announcement issued by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Environment and Waste Management.

The council also directed businesses to cooperate with municipal waste collection teams during the operation.

Authorities warned that anyone found dumping garbage in the middle of roads, drainage channels or other unauthorized locations, or disposing of waste after the designated collection period, could be arrested and prosecuted for violating municipal bylaws and the mayoral order.

The program is being implemented by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Environment and Waste Management under the directive of Juba City Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani.

The council urged residents, shop owners and other business operators to cooperate with municipal authorities to improve cleanliness and protect public health and the environment in the capital.

“Clean Juba is everyone’s responsibility,” the announcement said.
