South Sudan, Russia Discuss Reviving RusHydro Energy Agreement

South Sudan and Russia are discussing ways to revive a 2024 agreement with Russian hydropower company RusHydro as the two countries seek to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector and address South Sudan’s electricity needs.

South Sudan’s Minister of Energy and Dams, Agok Makur Kur, met with Russian Ambassador to South Sudan Alexander Kosmodemiyansky on Sept. 3 to discuss reactivating the memorandum of understanding signed with RusHydro, whose implementation had stalled.

The meeting focused on expanding bilateral cooperation and drawing on Russian expertise and technology in hydropower, oil and gas, and renewable energy, according to the Ministry of Energy and Dams.

The ministry said the cooperation could support efforts to address the country’s electricity challenges and meet growing energy demand.

Both sides stressed the need to revive joint projects and turn existing agreements into concrete actions, while strengthening cooperation in the energy sector and broader relations between South Sudan and Russia.

The meeting comes as South Sudan continues efforts to expand its energy infrastructure and improve access to electricity.
