South Sudan to assume vice-chairmanship of ISA Africa Regional Committee in November

South Sudan will assume the vice-chairmanship of the International Solar Alliance Regional Committee for the Africa Region in November, the Minister of Energy and Dams said Saturday.

Minister Agok Makur Kur made the announcement after returning to Juba from the eighth meeting of the International Solar Alliance, or ISA, Regional Committee for Africa, held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, from Aug. 25-27.

Speaking upon his arrival at Juba International Airport, Makur said the meeting focused on the development of solar energy, expanding renewable energy use and strengthening cooperation and investment in Africa’s energy sector.

He said South Sudan’s selection as vice-chair represents an important achievement that will strengthen the country’s participation in regional and international energy forums while creating opportunities for cooperation and partnerships in solar energy.

Makur said South Sudan’s participation also provided an opportunity to engage with governments, institutions, development partners and investors on potential renewable energy projects.

The engagements are expected to support government efforts to expand access to electricity, improve energy security and promote renewable energy development, he said.

The minister said the Ministry of Energy and Dams would continue to pursue regional and international partnerships and take advantage of South Sudan’s solar energy potential to support national development and improve electricity services.

The International Solar Alliance is an international organization that promotes solar energy deployment and cooperation among member countries.
