The High-Level Committee on Economic Reforms has begun its work, with the government announcing progress in the payment of salaries to civil servants, organized forces and state governments.
Speaking after the committee’s first meeting, Information Minister Atem Wek Ateny said salary payments were already underway.
“I wanted to tell the people of South Sudan the good news that came out of the Minister of Finance’s briefing that the salaries are now being paid,” Ateny said.
According to him, some ministries, the army and other organized forces have received salaries, while funds for state governments are being transferred.
The committee also discussed measures to boost non-oil revenue collection, including reviewing non-statutory tax exemptions.
“Work is underway to ensure that the non-statutory exemptions are either canceled completely or reviewed,” Ateny said.
He added that the committee will meet every Monday to support economic reforms and help ensure consistent payment of civil servants’ salaries.
The committee is expected to submit its first progress report to Cabinet on Friday.
