South Sudan has condemned a drone attack on Amiet Market in the Abyei Area, allegedly carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces on October 19, which resulted in civilian casualties, injuries and significant property damage.
In a statement issued on October 19, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the attack struck multiple locations within the market, located north of Abyei town.
The government described the incident as unacceptable and extended its condolences to families who lost loved ones, while wishing those injured a speedy recovery.
Following the attack, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Sudan’s ambassador to South Sudan to convey the government’s strong protest and express concern over the incident’s implications for civilian safety and stability in the disputed Abyei Area.
Juba called on the Sudanese government to refrain from actions that endanger civilian lives and property and urged both sides to address issues concerning Abyei through established diplomatic channels and existing dialogue mechanisms.
“The Government of the Republic of South Sudan reaffirms its commitment to the protection of civilians and to the preservation of peace, security, and stability in the Abyei Area,” the statement said.
South Sudan also urged Sudan to take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring and called for respect for peaceful coexistence and the resolution of disputes in accordance with international law.
The statement did not provide figures for the casualties or details of the extent of the damage.
