The late Richard Sultan wins IGAD Media Award

Richard Sultan, a journalist who passed away on Monday October 14th 2024 has won an IGAD Media Award under the digital category.

Sultan’s Award was handed over to fellow journalist Abraham Mamer, who himself won another award in the broadcast category.

“This award is proudly presented to Richard Sultan for winning digital category award at the IGAD Media Awards 2024 with excellent reporting on narration of hope, inspiring peaceful, secure and inclusive future in the IGAD region,” the regional body wrote.

Both Sultan and Mamer have shone light on journalism in the country.

Sultan’s award has been handed over to the office of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan or UJOSS.

“We have contacted the late Richard’s family and we expect to hand over the award to the brother of the late on Friday,” Oyet Patrick Charles, UJOSS Chairperson, said.

“We are saddened by the loss of a colleague who was still very young with a very promising future,” he said.

“The winning of the IGAD Media Awards speak volumes of the kind of work Richard was doing.”

Sultan worked for several media houses in the country including Juba Echo TV where he headed the Information, Communication Technology Department and was particularly in charge of the website. He also worked for Hot in Juba.

He was a freelancer for several international media as well.

“On behalf of the entire team at UJOSS and journalism fraternity with a heavy heart, I send sincere condolences to the family of Richard, We’re so incredibly sorry for this loss. We’re all thinking of Richard,” Oyet said.
