Flood-hit Mayom County calls for humanitarian assistance

The County Commissioner of Mayom County, Luka Chierey on Thursday called on the government and humanitarian agencies to provide badly need relief to displaced population due to flooding in the County.

 “My urgent call is to meet the needs of my people in Mayom County, we need medical supplies, shelters and non-food items for the displaced people,” said Chierey in an interview.

He disclosed that lactating mothers and pregnant women including people living with disabilities are suffering most due to lack of medicines, sheets, blankets and mosquito nets for them to cope.

Chierey disclosed that 8 payams including Mankien, Ruathnyibuol and Kueryiek have been completely submerged under water, adding that people have been evacuated using canoes to high grounds in the north eastern side of Mayom County.

He said that 80 percent of the population in Mayom County has been affected by the flooding.

Chierey disclosed that health facilities, schools, churches and other institution are also submerged in water.

“In Mayom County, only three payams have been spared of the floods and these payams include Wangbuor, Wangkei and Kuerbuone which is partly flooded,” said Chierey.
