South Sudan army displaces hundreds in Yei River County

MPs attend parliamentary sitting at Freedom Hall in Juba.

A law maker representing Yei River County in the national legislative assembly, Peter Lomude Francis said on Monday that hundreds of people evicted by the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) on land in Ombaci village are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

He said that the affected people are being sheltered at the Episcopal Church of South Sudan (ECSS)  in Yei.

Lomude who was speaking during parliamentary session in Juba, said the displaced people had their animals and other belongings looted by the SSPDF.

“As of Wednesday last week, 433 persons are sheltering at ECSS compound in Yei without food and non-food items,” he said.

He said that the 2018 revitalized peace agreement prohibits forceful eviction of civilians on their land.

Lomude said some of the civilians are sleeping under trees.

“I would like to make this appeal to this August house for urgent humanitarian assistance to children and women who are sheltering under trees within the ECSS compound in Yei town,” he said.

Our attempts to reach out to the spokesperson of the SSPDF Maj.Gen Lul Ruai Koang were futile by press time as our calls went unanswered on his phone.
