The Chief of Defense Forces Gen.Santino Deng Wol, has ordered for investigations into the recent shooting of the local chief of Lobonok payam near Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

The head chief of Lobonok payam, Mathew Kenyi Jale is currently nursing gunshot wounds after being shot on August 29 by officers of the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) while he was at his home in the late evening.

“What the Chief of Defense Forces did yesterday (Wednesday) was to send the force commander to Lobonok to find out what exactly happened, we have not yet received firsthand information from the base commander,” Maj.Gen Lul Ruai Koang, spokesman for SSPDF told The Juba Echo in Juba on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Noel Matayo, the youth leader for Lobonok community, said the shooting was an attempted assassination on Mathew Kenyi Jale.

Matayo said this was the second attempt at assassinating the local chief.

On August 2nd 2023, four civilians in Karpeto boma were shot dead by two SSPDF officers stationed at Longoya army garrison.

Matayo said his community wants the officers from the national security services and SSPDF to be replaced with police forces in the area.
