South Sudanese bag four medals at World Special Olympics Games

Three South Sudanese have won four medals at the Special Olympics World Games that concluded on Sunday in Berlin.

Rebecca Joshua Okwaci, the head of South Sudan Olympic Committee, said on Monday that the Special Olympics Games team left for Germany earlier this month to compete among 178 countries in the games.

She said South Sudanese athletes competed in 26 games.

“We have come home with celebration,” Okwaci told journalists at Juba International Airport.

Okwaci revealed that athletes Richard Patrick, Sarah Tombek, and Richard Peter won two silver medals and two Bronze medals for South Sudan.

“For us having four medals is something big that we need to recognize, these athletes come with two silver medals, two Bronze medals and Ribbon, they participated in 200 meter and 100 meter marathon and long jump,” she said.

The Special Olympics World Games are the world’s largest inclusive sports event. Thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities compete together in 26 sports.

The Games took place in Berlin from 17 to 25 June 2023.
