Regional heads of states have been urged on Wednesday to push the warring Sudanese parties to reach peaceful settlement of their differences.
Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), said the heads of states under the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) need to do more to ensure the resolutions they agreed upon in their communiqué on Monday after meeting in Djibouti are realized.
“Djibouti leadership should take serious steps in handling political developments in Sudan which is deadly and which is causing humanitarian crisis for our brothers and sisters in Sudan, we need to see political consensus among IGAD leaders for handling the unfolding situation in Sudan,” Yakani said in a statement issued in Juba.
In April 2023, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development tasked South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, Kenya’s William Ruto and Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti to help broker ceasefire in in Sudan.
Yakani said the long-awaited IGAD heads of states and governments summit on Sudan should prioritize resolving the deadly political crisis that erupted on April 15.
“The current leadership which is held by Djibouti should produce remarkable and tangible results that will bring back IGAD to play a very proactive role in securing peace and stability in the region and Sudan is the first test,” he said.
The fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo is close to entering two months of fierce fighting with no let up.
More than 1800 people have been killed in the conflict and millions displaced both internally and externally.
