2,000 dogs vaccinated in Bentiu IDP camp after confirming several victims of dog bites
Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse (VSF) on Monday revealed that it vaccinated 2,000 dogs after confirming 57 cases of dog bites since January in Bentiu internally displaced camp and among returnees in Rotriah IDP camp.
“Our main purpose for carrying out dogs vaccinations campaign is to reduce dog bites and rabbis disease,” Elijah Puot Liah, the VSF field project officer told Juba Echo in Bentiu town of Unity State.
He disclosed that several dogs are infected with rabbis due to flooding and poor hygienic conditions.
“As I am talking now dog bites continue and only Medicine Sans Frontieres Holland Hospital in Bentiu is managing dog bites,” Liah said.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and VSF last week met and raised concern over the increase in cases of dog bites in Bentiu IDP camp.
VSF said that plans are underway to castrate dogs in order to reduce on their number in the congested camps for IDPs.
