Bentiu internally displaced persons camp faces severe water shortage

Several internally displaced people in Bentiu camp are enduring severe water shortages.

Chap Wun Beit, the internally displaced person’s camp community high committee chairperson, said the water shortage is due to lack of fuel for pumping water.

“This happened on March 30, 2023 in sector-4 of Bentiu IDP camp where the main water supply lacked fuel for pumping out drinking water. I am in coordination with WASH partners to bring fuel from Juba to Bentiu IDP camp,” Wun told Juba Echo on Friday.
He added that many people are running and searching for water to cook food for their children.

The few remaining water points are overcrowded and creating conflicts among the women especially in sector-3 of Bentiu IDP camp.

Mer Garang, a 50-year old woman said her children slept without food on Thursday because of water shortage.

“Leave alone taking a shower and bathing, my children slept without food due to lack of water in our sector-4, I went to sector-5 looking for water but those women were about to fight me and I came back without water,” Garang said.

Severe water shortage forces some tea sellers and restaurant in sector-2 of Bentiu IDP camp out of business.
