Internally displaced persons (IDPs) have elected Chap Wun Beit as the chairperson of the committee in charge of Bentiu camp.

The election held on Tuesday was supervised by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) head of field office and the UN police, Joint police forces, International Organization for Migration (IOM) camp management.

Unity State relief and reintegration commission and state government representative, Yam Ruot said the election was free and peaceful.

 “My messages to the entire citizens of Unity State and beyond are that the community high committee election in the protection of civilian site in Bentiu was free and fair,” Ruot said.

He added that the state government will work hand- in- hand with the new community high committee leadership to reduce criminal and revenge killings targeting humanitarian workers and other innocent civilians.

The newly elected community high committee chairperson Chap Wun Beit has promised that his leadership will reduce crimes in Bentiu Internally displaced persons camp within a month.

“I am ready to reduce all these crimes and I am ready to implement the peace agreement in Bentiu IDP camp as we are part of South Sudan peace agreement,” Beit said.

More than 80 people have been killed in Bentiu IDP camp due to revenge killings and night robberies since last year.
