Vice President for Economic Cluster, Dr. James Wani Igga has assured the people of KajoKeji County that he will enforce the Presidential directive evicting cattle herders from Greater Equatorial region.
Wani was speaking on Tuesday before a crowd of mourners in Kajo-Keji County of Central Equatoria State following the killing of 27 civilians in Likamerok Village on February 2nd by suspected cattle herders from Jonglei State.
He disclosed that pastoralists have already left Magwi, Lobonok, Liria, and Lokiliri areas in Central and Eastern Equatoria States per the presidential orders issued in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
“Indeed, there are now no cattle in Magwi, the Madi area, Lobonok, Lokirir, Liria, and up to Mangala. They have all left and returned to their areas and the president’s orders have been implemented,” Wani said.
“All the cattle keepers have left for their home areas and the President has ordered Adil and the head of security forces to continue with the implementation of the order,” he added.
Wani said cattle herders in three cattle camps in Mangalla are expected to leave within this week to Jonglei State.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in a statement revealed that about 2,000 people, including 30 unaccompanied children were forced to flee from their homes in Kajo Keji due to the violence.
Among those killed were four volunteers from the South Sudan Red Cross Society, who were stationed in the area to conduct Ebola awareness following the previous outbreak of the deadly disease in neighboring Uganda.
The Red Cross said its volunteers in Kajo-Keji were taken from their homes and “callously killed”.
