Rabies causes death of over 1000 dogs in Unity state

A bout 1500 dogs have died of rabies in Bentiu protection of civilians’ camp and Rubkona County of Unity State.

This was confirmed Wednesday in Bentiu town by Jal Kuol Malow, the Rubkona County health director.

Marlow said they are working with health partners especially Veterinary San Frontiers (VSF) organization to vaccinate all dogs in the affected areas.

He said cases of dog bites are currently on the rise in Rubkona County and Bentiu town.

Marlow added that many dogs are suffering from rabies because of the recent heavy flooding which confined dogs in small island areas without free movement.

“I have talked to Veterinary San Frontiers to carry out vaccination for dogs and cats in the most populated areas of Bentiu IDPs camp, Rubkona and Bentiu town and they had agreed with me they will start the vaccination as soon as possible,” said Marlow.

On January 31, 2022, cats suspected to be infected of rabies bit an 8-year -old boy to death in Rubkona.
