The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has passed the 2024/25 budget for the regional body totaling to more than one hundred fourteen million US Dollars.

The regional parliament says, it’s prioritizing attainment of peace and security in East Africa.

The budget of $114,425,842 was presented by South Sudan’s minister for East African Affairs, Deng Alor Kuol on Friday.

The legislators say they are hopeful the budget will positively impact to the eight East African countries

The members of the East African Community are; South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi and the recently admitted Democratic Republic of Congo or DRC

Admission of DRC means the regional body has to find ways of dealing with insecurity in the Eastern DRC.

The conflict in the Eastern Congo is seen as one of the major threats to stability of the region.

In the budget for the upcoming financial year, over 50% is to be allocated to the East African secretariat for its oversight activities being the accounting arm of the assembly, the legislators urge the secretariat to consider demanding priorities of the citizens of the region.
