South Sudan opposition leader calls for consensus among parties on 2024 elections

The chairperson of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), Lam Akol Ajawin has called for
consensus among parties to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement on the election roadmap.
Lam was speaking after meeting James Wani Igga, the Vice President for Economic Cluster over
preparations towards the upcoming 2024 elections expected at the end of the transitional
period.
“We think that the process entails consensus between the parties to agree on the way forward
as they did in August last year, when the transitional period was extended for two years. It is
important for consensus to be built among the parties to the peace agreement,” said Lam.
“Elections are a requirement of the peace agreement, it is an inclusive process that requires the
parties to be engaged together so that we deliver the right of our people to be able to choose
their leaders at the end of the interim period,” he added.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit earlier this month, reconstituted the National Election
Commission (NEC), National Constitutional Review commission (NCRC), and the political Parties’
Council (PPC).

The President appointed, Prof.Abednego Akok Kacuol as the chairperson for the National
Election Commission, and Riang Yier Zuor as the chairperson for National Constitutional Review
Commission.
