The tainted image of South Sudan in the region and international levels will only be transformed through holding free, fair and credible elections in 2024, according to the former head of it’s electoral commission.
Prof. Abednego Akok said the upcoming election slated for December 2024 said provides a lifetime opportunity to demonstrate that the youngest nation is on it’s path to democratization process.
“I appeal to South Sudanese that you have done good to liberate your country, but for the last 12 years our image has become very low internationally. The only way for us to raise our image is to genuinely prepare for the 2024 election,” Akok said during a symposium on women peace and security held at Palm Africa Hotel in Juba on Tuesday.
He said citizens must be informed on the Election Act and also on voter registration prior to the election.
In September, Nicholas Haysom the Special Representative of the Secretary General while briefing the UN Security Council revealed that the coming months would be a litmus test for the parties to demonstrate their commitment to the peace roadmap amid delays and setbacks.
Several experts have underscored that the revitalized peace agreement has not translated into tangible peace and security.
In August 2022, the parties to the revitalized peace agreement extended the transitional period for 24-months that will elapse in February 2024.
However, the delays in implementation of the security arrangements, enactment of permanent constitution and establishment of electoral laws and institutions could undermine conduct of free, fair and credible election.
