The Sudan transitional sovereign council and various political parties have endorsed South Sudan mediation to end the ongoing conflict in the country.
This was revealed in a communiqué issued late Wednesday in Juba, the capital of South Sudan at the end of the two-day consultative meeting held from October 23-25.
Dhieu Mathok Diing Wol, the deputy head of South Sudan mediation committee that mediated the 2020 Juba peace agreement between the Sudan sovereign council and various opposition parties, said the meeting endorsed President Salva Kiir to engage and mediate peace between the warring parties.
“As a country we have a role that we can play in this conflict, South Sudan cannot sit down and watch while things are falling apart in our neighboring country,” Mathok told journalists.
The meeting was attended by members of the Sudan transitional sovereign council led by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and 14 political parties to review the 2020 Juba peace agreement and also seek solutions to end the conflict that has been raging since April 15.
Mathok said the Sudanese leaders are supporting the peace efforts underway in the Saudi Arabia coastal city of Jeddah.
He added they are hoping for the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to reach agreement on cessation of hostilities, opening up of humanitarian corridor and political settlement of the conflict.
Mathok disclosed that Juba plans to host peace forum bringing all Sudanese political forces and civil society to discuss peace in their country.
“We are expecting South Sudan to host a bigger forum where the Sudanese political parties and civil society organizations, faith-based groups and all political activists to come to South Sudan through invitation of President Salva Kiir so that people discuss on how to end the war in Sudan,” he said.
Tut Gatluak, the head of the South Sudan mediation team on Sudan said they invited parties to Juba peace agreement to hold discussion and find amicable solution to the conflict in Sudan.
“We have decided to invite Sudanese leaders with intention to stop war in Sudan, we stand for peace in Sudan because South Sudan has direct link to Sudan, we want peace and stability in Sudan,” Gatluak said.
He added they latest consultative meeting was aimed at preventing the current situation in Sudan from deteriorating further.
The Sudan transitional government signed the Juba peace agreement with opposition groups under the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) that include SPLM-N sector led by Malik Agar, Justice Equality Movement under Jibril Ibrahim, Democratic Union party led by Eltom Hajou and the Sudan Liberation Movement under Minni Minnawi.
The agreement involves power-sharing, wealth-sharing, transitional justice, security, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees.
The SPLM-N sector led by Abdel Aziz Al-Hilu and Sudan Liberation Movement under Abdul Wahi Al-Nur did not sign the peace deal.
